Overview
Miles is a Chartered Engineer who practices as a Forensic Mechanical and Metallurgical Engineer and who provides Forensic Investigation and Expert Witness services to the insurance, legal and commercial sectors.
He is qualified to degree level in the fields of Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgy and Materials Science.
Miles is a professional member of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (MIMMM), is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (FCIPHE) and is a member of the UK Register of Expert Witnesses (UKREW).
Academic background and career history
Miles graduated from the University of Nottingham with a BEng honours degree in Mechanical Engineering Design, Materials and Manufacture and began his career in metallurgy and metallurgical failure investigation in 1992 whilst working for British Aerospace (now BAe Systems).
After joining Dr J H Burgoyne & Partners (Burgoynes) in 1997, Miles specialised in the forensic investigation of a wide range of engineering incidents and failures by applying his expertise in mechanical, metallurgical and materials engineering.
During his 18 years with Burgoynes, 9 years as a Partner, Miles investigated over 850 cases in the UK and overseas.
Whilst with Burgoynes, Miles obtained a Masters of Science degree with distinction from the University of Surrey in Advanced Materials Technology, specialising in metallurgical and materials failure analysis.
In July 2015, Miles left Burgoynes to establish his own firm, Hammersley Forensic Investigation, HFI, and he continues to provide forensic investigation and Expert Witness services to the same client base. In its first four years of trading, HFI investigated more than 100 cases for a wide range of clients including many of the major insurers and legal firms.
Miles has acted as an expert witness for claimants and defendants in many civil claims, including as a single joint expert, and has attended court to give expert witness testimony many times since 1997.
Miles is familiar with both the Civil and the Criminal Procedure Rules and with the preparation of expert reports and experts’ joint statements for the court.
He also has extensive experience of acting as an Expert Witness for the defendant in health and safety related investigations conducted by the HSE or other regulatory bodies and has provided evidence in this capacity at inquests and criminal trials.
Miles is a practical, hands-on engineer who has assisted with the construction of two light aircraft and who has restored several classic cars. Miles has also played an active, hands-on role in extending and refurbishing two houses that included designing and installing the plumbing and heating systems.
Miles’ practical, hands-on engineering and construction background has proved very beneficial to him when conducting engineering and metallurgical investigations and when devising and conducting bespoke testing.
